Tributes

  1. To Margaret, the Frew Family, Friends and Community of Mr. Denis Frew,

It is with a heavy heart that I write these words in remembrance of a man whose presence, wisdom and character have left a lasting imprint not only on me personally, but on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Denis Frew was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He was known to express frustration swiftly, but never harshly, and never for long.

His temperament was marked not by bitterness, but by a rare ability to reset, reflect and move forward without resentment. He possessed that rare quality of offering guidance without imposition, teaching without fanfare and leading without ego.

He was a steady voice of reason in times of uncertainty and a quiet, reassuring presence in moments of doubt. Through his mentorship, I learned lessons that will stay with me for life, lessons not just about work, but about decency, thoughtfulness and the value of perspective.

He gave his time freely and generously, not just to his colleagues but to our families as well. My own family shares in the sadness of his passing, yet we also share a deep gratitude. We are richer for having Denis, Mr. Frew in our lives.

Denis had a unique way of seeing the world — a way that transformed even the most complex of challenges into something manageable, even meaningful. His “Frewisms”, wise, truthful and delivered with a characteristic clarity, will live on in our conversations, in our decisions and in our reflections.

One of his most enduring pieces of counsel was simple yet profound: “Give it time. Sleep on it. The answer will come.” It reminded us all that patience, more often than force, reveals the path forward.

And now, Denis, it is your time to rest. To sleep on it. Knowing that you leave behind a legacy of truth, respect and humanity.

You may not have stood tall in stature, but your impact was immense. You were a great mining accountant, a remarkable mentor and a citizen whose quiet contributions strengthened every community you touched.

We will, I will, miss your words, your wit and your wisdom. But we will carry them with us, always.

    With deepest respect and affection.

Hilton Goldfinch and the entire Goldfinch Family.

  2. To Margaret and Family,

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Denis. He was a very genuine and kind man and I hold fond memories of my interactions with him over the years.

It was always lovely to see Denis, yourself and your friend John at the Illawarra Turf Club where you enjoyed many race days together.

My thoughts are with you Margaret, your family and friends. May happy memories of Denis bring you comfort during this sad time.
