Eric Blain was one of four foundation members of Towradgi Surf Life Saving Club in 1947. He was 16 years of age at the time as was later awarded Life Membership of the club. Its formation arose from the need for a patrolled beach at Towradgi as many European immigrants displaced by World War 2 settled in the Fairy Meadow/ Towradgi area. They were unaccustomed to surf conditions encountered off our shoreline and often unwittingly risked their lives while swimming. Eric was also employed by Charlie Bech a builder who constructed houses on blocks which fronted what is now Marine Parade, Towradgi. These were relocated once they were completed. Eric was an apprentice carpenter to Charlie. He slept in the houses during their construction and went surfing in his breaks. He was also a good friend of Robert “Bob” Evans the spiritual Australian head of surf board riding in Australia. Bob was also founder of “Surfing World”. Bob was affectionately known to Eric as “Serge” for his practice of wearing a Serge suit while employed as an insurance salesman in Wollongong. Eric never lost his passion for Towradgi Surf Life Saving Club as witnessed by his contributions and involvement in the club’s 50th Anniversary celebrations in 1998. Eric by this time had moved onto success as a family man, real estate agent, developer and hotelier.
We have lost a great champion of the community who gave selflessly for the benefits of many generations of surfers in the Towradgi area and those who frequently visit. You will be very much missed.
Wayne Shiels, Life Member of Towradgi Surf Life Saving Club.
