Tributes

  1. Maureen introduced me to the wonderful world of Folk Dancing. She seemed to have unlimited enthusiasm and energy for dance. She inspired and encouraged me every week that she was teaching. I am blessed to have known her. Yvonne

  2. I knew Maureen as the mum of my dear friend Kim. She always made me feel welcomed, valuable and a part of the family. She taught me how to make homemade pesto! I still love it. Thank you Maureen for being a strong advocate for young mums for showing us the ropes and for loving all equally

  3. Through Maureen I have seen what joy dancing can give in your life.
It was a pleasure to watch her do the most complicated dances.
Maurer was a wonderful teacher and friend who gave her heart and soul to
    Folk dancing.
I will miss her very much. Betsy

  4. I met Maureen in 1980 when she started Folk Dance classes in Katoomba.
It was a revelation to be introduced to the amazing world of Eastern European music and dance. It changed my life.
I had no experience in dance and I will never forget what a wonderful, patient teacher Maureen was with the likes of me.
When my daughter was in high school she and her friend used to wag school to come to Folk Dancing !!
My very best wishes go to Kim,
Jodi , Adam and their families.
    June Rose( previously Humphreys).🌺

  5. I got my start playing folk music when I first came across Maureen’s dance classes in Hazelbrook back in the early 80’s. She was one of the most well balanced people I knew (both physically and psychologically). She was a dear soul and a person who never spoke ill of anyone and always brought out the best in those around her. I recently reconnected with her at a Balkan Boogie dance in the Blue Mountains after a 20 year hiatus. She had suffered a stroke and was not the same vibrant dancer that she used to be. However, her strength of spirit and generosity had not been affected and will always prevail in my memory of her.

  6. Maureen was one of the most warm hearted persons I have ever met. When I moved to the mountains in 1983 I joined her dance classes in Katoomba and discovered a passion that I still follow to this day. Maureen was generous, funny, inventive and welcoming. Those are memories I will always cherish.

  7. Maureen was a passionate and skilled dancer, an exemplary teacher and, most importantly, a warm-hearted person who could always get people smiling. She thought the best of everyone and I am glad to have known her.

  8. Yesterday afternoon as we our last dance for the year, Maureen was everywhere. I brought some costumes from the years we performed and the albums were open for display. This morning I remembered to email Graeme to thanks him for all the photos he took when we were young 🙂 When I was new in Australia, she made me feel as if I was already living here for many years and the dancing day was always spot on. Never miss it unless I had really important reason like being sick. I have learnt so many dances and re-enforces the one I knew already. Love her for ever

  9. Maureen, a generous soul and beautiful dancer. You introduced me to a dance form and music in the 1980s in Katoomba that has provided ongoing joy to me and many, many others.

You didn’t mind us bringing our sometimes unruly little kids to dance with us and join in when they could. You encouraged us all, including those little kids who also remember you fondly.

Dancing with you in Greece, at the Opera House Folkloric all those years ago, and at many FDA workshops was a gift. Your smile always made us all feel special.

My thoughts are with your family.

    Vale Maureen.

  10. Maureen Elizabeth you trod this earth with dignity, kindness and love and are fondly remembered by Robert and Jennifer Creeke

  11. Maureen made me so welcome when I joined her dance classes 2 years ago. Her knowledge of the many dances from all over the world was amazing; as were the tidbits of information on the origins she gave us, Always a lovely smile, always enthusiastic. A wonderful hostess with her delicious soups and entertaining dice game. In fact an inspiration in so many ways. A truly remarkable woman.
Thank you. Forever in my heart.
